A 36-year-old driver was arrested this morning after he sped away from a California Highway Patrol officer, resulting in a brief pursuit on the Bay Bridge.
At about 8 a.m., an officer tried to stop a Chevrolet for a carpool violation at the bridge’s toll plaza, but the driver sped away, according to the CHP.
After crossing the eastern span, the Chevy spun out near the Yerba Buena tunnel and the driver fled on foot. Officers chased the suspect and ultimately deployed a Taser stun gun before taking him into custody, CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.
The suspect has been identified as Oakland resident Marvin Gross.
Gross was arrested on suspicion of evading an officer, driving with a suspended license and a carpool violation, Wilkenfeld said.
Gross allegedly told officers he fled because he didn’t want his car to be towed, according to Wilkenfeld.
The pursuit caused a backup on the bridge during the morning commute. The bridge’s far right lane was blocked briefly while Caltrans crews removed the Chevy.
