A new program will give some voters in San Francisco the chance to have their voices heard by proposing a new law, Assemblyman David Chiu announced Wednesday.
The “There Ought to be a Law” program is open to all District 17 constituents and will allow participants to submit their ideas for new state legislation for the 2016 legislative year, according to Chiu’s office.
Proposals can range from local community improvements to statewide reforms. The proposals can also be entirely new policies or revisions to already existing laws, Chiu’s office said.
“Some of the most interesting pieces of legislation I have worked on throughout my career came directly from constituents who are dealing with challenges or see opportunities in their everyday lives,” Chiu said in a statement.

Applications for the proposals are due by Jan. 15.
