The South Korean government has suspended Asiana Airlines flights in and out of San Francisco International Airport in response to the deadly plane crash last year, SFO officials said.
Three teenage girls were killed and 180 people were injured when Asiana Flight 214 struck a seawall while trying to land at the airport the morning of July 6, 2013.
SFO officials said today they don’t know when the suspension will begin or how it will impact passenger travel.
SFO spokesman Doug Yakel said today that while he is aware that the government of South Korea announced a suspension, he said he doesn’t have background on the suspension and that the details surrounding it remain speculative.
Yakel said he’s not sure how it will impact SFO, but he said that United Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Korean Air also serve both San Francisco and South Korea’s capital city of Seoul.
He also said it is also possible that Asiana Airlines will appeal the suspension.
An official reached via phone at the Office of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in San Francisco refused to comment on the announced suspension this afternoon.
