An excavating crew struck a gas line this afternoon in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, a utility spokesman said.
A third-party contractor was operating an excavator near the intersection of Oak and Baker streets around 1:30 p.m. today when they struck a four-inch plastic gas line that appears to have been feeding gas to a nearby apartment building, PG&E spokesman J.D. Guidi said.
A gas service representative was dispatched at 1:32 p.m. and arrived at the site at 1:46 p.m. By 2:25 p.m., the flow of gas had been stopped, Guidi said.
While 13 customers remain without gas service this afternoon, no injuries were reported and no evacuations were necessary, according to Guidi.
The digging crew had contacted PG&E prior to excavating, but somehow still struck the gas line, Guidi said.
Nonetheless, Guidi said anytime contractors or customers are digging, they are asked to call 811 and utility workers will come out to mark the gas lines in the area.
Guidi said PG&E crews will remain on site until repairs are completed and gas service has been restored to all residents in the area.
