12:33 PM: A driver involved in a collision that killed a pedestrian on San Francisco’s Van Ness Avenue early this morning has been identified as 27-year-old Emeryville resident Mageb Hussain (photo above), a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
The collision was reported at about 12:55 a.m. near Van Ness and Pacific avenues, according to San Francisco police.
When officers arrived, they found a person in the roadway who was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the pedestrian, a 57-year-old man, is being withheld until his family has been notified of his death, according to the medical examiner’s office.
The driver of the car that struck the pedestrian apparently began to walk away from the scene, heading west on Pacific Avenue, before witnesses pointed him out and officers took him into custody, police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Susan Fahey said the man has been identified as Hussain and that he was booked into jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and on a misdemeanor warrant.
Hussain was still in custody as of late this morning, Fahey said.
The pedestrian death is San Francisco’s third so far in 2014.
There were 21 pedestrian fatalities last year—the most since 2007.

6:32 AM: The driver involved in a crash that killed a pedestrian on San Francisco’s Van Ness Avenue this morning has been arrested, police said.
Officers responded to a report of a crash in the area of Van Ness and Pacific avenues at about 12:55 a.m., Officer Gordon Shyy said.
When officers arrived, they found a person on the roadway, according to Shyy.
The pedestrian, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
Investigators learned that the driver began to walk away from the scene, heading west on Pacific Avenue, after the crash, according to Shyy.
Shyy said when officers arrived at the scene, witnesses pointed the driver out and he was detained.
He was later arrested for felony vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run.
Police have not yet released the name of the driver.
