San Bruno police searched the area around Skyline College and the San Francisco Jail looking for a man spotted holding a rifle this afternoon but did not locate him, police said.
The San Francisco Sheriff’s Department received a report of a man with a rifle in the area around the jail at 3:55 p.m., San Bruno police said.
Around 4:20 p.m., authorities alerted school personnel that the man might be heading toward the campus, located at 3300 College Drive, spokeswoman Barbara Christensen said.
The community college is adjacent to the jail facility.
A lieutenant at the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services said he received an alert advising people on campus to stay away from windows and lock all doors.
Police and sheriff’s deputies searched the area including on the campus but did not find the man with a rifle, described as a white man in his early 40s wearing blue jeans, a blue plaid shirt and a baseball cap worn backwards, police said.
The lockdown was lifted by about 6:30 p.m. but the campus was closed for the night, Christensen said.
Tonight was scheduled to be the last night of summer courses and it was unclear if those classes would be rescheduled.
