A power outage stretching from Berkeley to El Cerrito has knocked out power for 40,000 residents and businesses, shut down traffic signals and disrupted BART service in downtown Berkeley.
The outage started at about 9:40 a.m. and could be affecting customers as far north as Richmond and San Pablo, according to PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian. PG&E crews are still assessing its cause.
Trains are not stopping at the Downtown Berkeley BART station, BART officials said. BART reported the service disruption at about 9:45 a.m.
Several traffic lights are out in Berkeley, police confirmed. While the signals are out, drivers should treat them as a four-way stop sign and yield to other drivers.
