The San Francisco medical examiner’s office has identified a boy who was fatally struck this morning by a San Francisco Municipal Railway light-rail vehicle as 12-year-old Andrew Wu.
Andrew, who lived nearby, was running across a crosswalk at the intersection of San Jose and Lakeview avenues when he was struck, police said. Police had initially said he was 11 years old.
Fire officials first received reports of the accident at 8:28 a.m.
Andrew was pronounced dead at the scene and firefighters had to remove his body from underneath the Muni vehicle. His parents were at the scene of the accident, according to police.
He was a student at Aptos Middle School, police said.
San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency director of transportation Ed Reiskin said in a statement, “Speaking for the SFMTA and its more than 5,000 employees, I express our deepest sympathy to the family of the child killed near Lakeview and San Jose Avenue in the tragic collision this morning involving a Muni train.”
“The SFMTA adopted a Vision Zero policy in 2014, with the goal of eliminating all traffic deaths in San Francisco by 2024. We are committed to working with our partners to make our streets safer, while educating the public on traffic safety, enforcing traffic laws and prioritizing resources to implement initiatives that save lives,” Reiskin said.
