There were no reported injuries from a powerful earthquake that shook off the coast of Eureka on Sunday night but aftershocks are expected for the region in the next few days.
The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 and a depth of 4.3 miles that struck off the Eureka coast in Humboldt County was reported at 10:18 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
As of about 1 a.m., 12 aftershocks have shook in the region, including an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 reported at 10:36 p.m. and a depth of 6.2 miles, U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Jana Pursley said.
It was followed by another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 reported at 10:50 p.m. with a depth of 1.6 miles, she said.
With the earthquake’s powerful 6.9 preliminary magnitude, more aftershocks are expected in the next few days, according to Pursley.
Sunday night’s earthquake was the 11th earthquake within a 100 km radius of the epicenter with a magnitude of 6.5 or more since 1900, Pursley said.
Deputies from sheriff’s offices in Humboldt and Mendocino counties did not report any injuries or damages due to the trembler.
Police agencies between Sonoma County and San Francisco did not receive any calls from anyone reporting they felt the earthquake.
No tsunami warning was issued by the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.
Many people took to Twitter after the earthquake shook including a tweet that from Sonoma County Supervisor Mike McGuire that reads, “Happy things seem to be ok after a 6.9 earthquake, centered just offshore Eureka. No injuries/serious damage reported yet.”
Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles also tweeted, “Eureka, you and your earthquake are on my mind. Big hugs and hoping all is ok. xo”
