A three-alarm fire in San Francisco’s Mission District displaced 21 people from an apartment building and destroyed a commercial tire shop Sunday morning, a fire department spokeswoman said today.
The fire, located near the intersection of 16th and Shotwell streets, was reported at 7:47 a.m. Sunday, according to San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge.
Rolling Stock, an auto mechanic and tire shop at 2860 16th St. that sold tires and custom rims, was destroyed in the fire.
Talmadge said black smoke billowed high into the air as a result of burning tires.
She said the estimated structural and content damage to the building was $2 million.
The fire also damaged a three-story, six-unit apartment building next door, according to Talmadge.
No injuries were reported but 17 adults, four children and a pet were displaced by the blaze and extensive water damage.
The residential building sustained structural damage estimated at $750,000 and content damage estimated at $250,000, Talmadge said.
The fire was brought under control at 11:54 a.m.
Fire investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blaze, but Talmadge said the investigation is moving slowly because the roof has collapsed and the building was red-tagged following the fire.
“It’s not structurally sound, so going in there is not a great idea,” Talmadge said.
San Francisco Assistant Fire Chief Dave Franklin said roughly 110 fire personnel worked to extinguish the blaze and that the American Red Cross responded to assist the displaced residents.
Talmadge said six people were also displaced in the Mission District when a two-alarm fire occurred at two buildings near the intersection of Hampshire and 23rd streets early Thursday morning.
She said that fire was reported at 12:52 a.m. and under control by 1:43 a.m. The buildings sustained less than $100,000 in damage to the structure and contents.
The cause of that fire remains under investigation, according to Talmadge.
