4:43 PM: PG&E has stopped a gas leak in San Francisco’s Hunters Point neighborhood this afternoon, a utility spokesman said.
The leak at Innes Avenue and Griffith Street was reported at 3:12 p.m., San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.
The underground line appears to have been ruptured by workers using a backhoe, Talmadge said.
PG&E has a 4-inch steel gas main connected to a three-quarter-inch service line in that area, PG&E spokesman Paul Moreno said.
Moreno said that crews stopped the flow of gas at about 4 p.m. The contractor had struck the three-quarter-inch line and ruptured it, he said.
Repairs are expected to be completed by 8 p.m.
Moreno said the contractor had not called PG&E to find out the location of the underground gas lines before digging.
“We strongly urge contractors to call 811 before they dig as state law requires,” Moreno said. “The call is free, the repair bill is not.”
