A 34-year-old man who barricaded himself into an apartment in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood during a domestic dispute late Tuesday was arrested after he peacefully surrendered Wednesday evening following a 20-hour standoff with police, a San Francisco police spokeswoman said today.
San Francisco resident Baron Deshay was arrested on suspicion of resisting, delaying, or obstructing peace officer duties, for dissuading a victim or witness, for violating a stay away order, for vandalizing property, and for an outstanding $10,000 warrant for vandalism, according to San Francisco police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan.
San Francisco police officers received a call from a 33-year-old woman reporting a domestic dispute at about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at a residence in the 200 block of Schwerin Street near Sunnydale Avenue.
The woman, also a San Francisco resident, told police that Deshay allegedly made threats against her during a verbal altercation, according to police.
Deshay then went into his apartment and refused to come out and speak with responding officers, police said.
The woman was not injured during the incident and there were no other individuals inside Deshay’s apartment, according to police.
Police negotiators arrived, but Deshay ignored them and a lengthy standoff ensued.
Gatpandan said that during these types of standoff situations, when no one appears to be in danger and no hostages are involved, the San Francisco Police Department tends to wait for the suspect to come out on their own accord.
“We wanted to exhaust all measures before using force on the suspect,” Gatpandan said.
Gatpandan said negotiators made contact with Deshay on Tuesday evening and again on Wednesday but it wasn’t until around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday that he peacefully surrendered.
Gatpandan said she wasn’t able to divulge the nature of the domestic dispute or the nature of the relationship between Deshay and the woman involved.
Deshay will be arraigned Friday, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
