San Francisco police academy recruits on their way to a traffic-control assignment for the Bay to Breakers stopped a burglary in progress on Sunday, police said today.
Members of the police academy’s recruit class were riding in a chartered Muni bus on Sunday around 5 a.m. when they saw a suspect in a store in the 800 block of Market Street, police said today.
The recruits saw the suspect smash a display case and notified their training officers, who stopped the bus.
Officers stopped one man as he walked out of the store with a rolling bag that contained stolen merchandise, and a second man walking away from the scene who dropped a jacket containing stolen items, police said.
Police arrested Cory Lawler, 37, of Fremont, and Dale Brackner, 55, of Brisbane, on suspicion of burglary and possession of stolen property.
The recruits are members of San Francisco’s 244th police academy class.
“This arrest provided the recruits, who are in their 19th week of a 32-week course, an opportunity to put their training into action and see first-hand how an arrest and investigation unfolds, sometimes in just a matter of seconds,” said Capt. Greg Yee, commanding officer of the police academy, in a statement.
