A second suspect in a shooting near a popular tourist destination in San Francisco was arrested after a car chase over the Bay Bridge and a search near the Oakland-Emeryville border this afternoon, Oakland police said.
The shooting was reported at 12:09 p.m. near the corner of Lombard and Jones streets in the city’s Russian Hill neighborhood, only about a block from the famous crooked section of Lombard, San Francisco police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said.
A man there was shot in the torso. Manfredi did not immediately know his condition.
Two suspects sped away from the shooting toward the freeway. San Francisco police pursued the suspects over the Bay Bridge with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, Manfredi said.
Eventually they got off the freeway and one of the suspects was taken into custody in the 1000 block of 60th Street. Streets were shut down in the area while police from multiple agencies searched the area for about three hours. Oakland police said shortly after 3 p.m. that the second suspect had been arrested.
San Francisco Supervisor Julie Christensen, who represents the Russian Hill neighborhood, said in a statement that she was “troubled and angry” about the shooting of a tourist near a popular destination.
“There are no apologies or wishes that can adequately offset the impacts of this vicious crime,” she said. “I urge anyone with any information about this incident to contact the Police Department with information.”
The search involved officers from the San Francisco, Oakland and Emeryville police departments as well as the CHP.
Streets were shut down and helicopters hovered overhead. Oakland police said following the arrest of the suspect that the streets would reopen as soon as possible.
