A man driving a stolen car at speeds of at least 100 mph died when the car crashed into a concrete pillar on Interstate Highway 80 in San Francisco this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Shortly after 6 a.m., a man in his 30s was driving a 1998 Acura Integra east on Highway 80 at speeds of at least 100 mph, CHP officers said.
The driver lost control of the car west of the First Street off-ramp and CHP officers said the car struck the left side of the jersey wall, or concrete barrier.
CHP officers said the car continued sideways onto the left shoulder adjacent to the First Street off-ramp when it struck a large 8-foot by 8-foot concrete bridge support pillar. The driver suffered fatal injuries upon impact, according to the CHP.
Passersby removed the unresponsive driver from the car as it slowly became engulfed in flames, CHP officers said.
Arriving medical personnel attempted to revive the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver had no identification with him and CHP officers said the San Francisco medical examiner’s office is in the process of identifying him.
The car was later reported stolen to San Francisco police, CHP officers said.
