A San Francisco police sergeant is on paid leave after allegedly driving drunk and crashing into a parked car in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset neighborhood on Tuesday evening, a police spokesman said today.
Sgt. Thomas Haymond was off-duty and driving near 12th Avenue and Lawton Street around 8:35 p.m. Tuesday when he allegedly crashed into a parked car that then went into a tree, San Francisco police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.
Residents heard the noise from the crash, looked out the window and called police about the incident, Esparza said.
Officers arrived, followed a trail of debris from the incident and found the alleged driver, Haymond, at a home in the 1100 block of Moraga Street, Esparza said.
Haymond was then taken into custody on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run, he said.
He has since been released.
No injuries were reported in the crash, Esparza said.
The sergeant is taking personal time off and once he returns, he will be reassigned to an administrative position, Esparza said.
The department’s Internal Affairs Division is investigating the case, he said.
