11:33 AM, 3/11: Overnight repairs enabled San Francisco Municipal Railway cable cars to get back up and running along Powell Street today, a Muni spokesman said.
The Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason cable cars went out of service on the Powell Street portion of those routes after an alarm went off around 9:45 a.m. Monday indicating a cable problem on that stretch, spokesman Paul Rose said.
Bus shuttles were in place Monday to accommodate the affected riders. After repairs were made, cable car serve was able to resume this morning as scheduled, Rose said.
Rose said crews spent most of Monday working to identify the problem.

8:36 PM: Cable cars are out of service on Powell Street in San Francisco tonight as crews look for a possible malfunction on the line, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency spokesman Paul Rose said.
The Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason cable cars are not running past Jackson and Washington streets after a cable alarm went off around 9:45 a.m. today, notifying the agency of a potential problem with the cable, according to Rose.
“Crews [have been] working to identify any problems and make any necessary repairs since that time,” Rose said.
Bus shuttles are running on the Powell Street portion of the lines, according to Rose. There’s no estimated time when the cable cars will be able to run on Powell Street again, he said.
The Powell-Mason line normally begins at the Powell/Market turntable, and runs up and over Nob Hill and down to Bay Street at Fisherman’s Wharf.
The Powell-Hyde line also typically begins at the Powell/Market turntable and runs over Nob and Russian hills before ending at Aquatic Park near Ghiradelli Square.
