A vehicle in San Francisco’s Portola neighborhood fatally struck a cyclist this morning, according to police.
San Francisco police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said the collision appears to have been accidental. He said so far neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been a factor in the crash.
Emergency calls started coming in at about 10:15 a.m. reporting the collision at the intersection of Goettingen and Woolsey streets, Manfredi said.
The driver struck a parked vehicle while apparently attempting to avoid the cyclist, Manfredi said.
However, the cyclist was struck by the vehicle and died at the scene, Manfredi said.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the police investigation.
Manfredi said the cause of the collision remains under investigation. He said he doesn’t yet know whether the cyclist was wearing a helmet or whether the crash was captured on video surveillance.
The San Francisco medical examiner’s office has not yet released the identity of the cyclist.
