Did you hear (or feel) the wind last night? It was crazy, man. But it’s not over yet — weather forecasters expect the gusts to continue throughout the day.
According to the Chron, gusts of up to 75 mph were recorded off Ocean Beach last night, “the highest wind ever recorded there,” they report.
The wind knocked out power to 4600 San Francisco PG&E customers.
Muni service was disrupted when a massive, roughly 80-foot tree fell at 48th Ave near Geary and at Potrero between 24th and 25th streets, where a large tree fell on overhead utility pole.
According to San Francisco Department of Public Works spokeswoman Rachel Gordon, reports of fallen trees started coming in around 3 AM.
In the 700 block of Guerrero Street, a 30-foot tree fell onto cars, damaging several vehicles, Gordon said.
Another vehicle was damaged by fallen tree debris at 14th and Sanchez streets, she said.
In other neighborhoods including the Sunset District, Lake Merced area, Mission District, Cole Valley, and Western Addition, crews were working this morning to clear debris, she said.
General property damage has been reported (for example, the Alexandria Theater sign was damaged, per Richmond SF), but so far we haven’t heard of any injuries.
Great Highway has also been closed due to hazardous conditions this morning. DPW shut down the roadway at around 3:30 AM between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard. Sand was being blown onto the roadway, creating hazardous driving conditions, Gordon said.
She did not have an estimate for when the roadway would reopen.
According to ABC7, the wind will continue for most of the day, with gusts as high as 55 MPH. A Gale Warning is in effect until 9 PM for San Francisco, and an Aviation Weather Warning has been issued until 5 PM for the entire Bay Area.
According to the Chron, after today’s windy weather, things will warm up, with highs of 72 expected by Wednesday.
