San Francisco residents can prepare for winter rains and protect against flooding by picking up free sandbags this month, San Francisco officials said today.
Sandbags will be distributed at five different locations around the city on Saturday Nov. 14 and Saturday Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., officials said.
Distribution sites include the San Francisco Fire Department training facility at 19th and Folsom streets; the Marina Green parking lot at Marina Boulevard and Marina Green Drive; The Great Highway at Balboa Street; the Sunset Circle parking lot at Lake Merced, at Sunset Boulevard and Lake Merced Boulevard; and at Recology Golden Gate at 900 7th St.
“With forecasts trending toward a wet El Nino winter in San Francisco, it is critical that we all prepare for what could be a very stormy season,” San Francisco Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru said in a statement today.
San Francisco Public Utilities General Manager Harlan Kelly said in a statement that the agency is actively cleaning out sewers to help ensure the system “performs as designed this rainy season.”
Residents who can’t make it to one of the Saturday sandbag events can also pick them up at the Public Works operations yard at 2323 Cesar Chavez St. Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entrance is at the Marin and Kansas streets gate.
