A fire in downtown San Francisco on Saturday morning displaced eight residents and damaged a three-story apartment building, a fire spokeswoman said.
Firefighters responded around 9 a.m. Saturday to a report of a fire that started in a garbage chute at a residential building at 780 Pine St. just east of Powell Street, San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.
Talmadge said firefighters arrived at the building and saw flames coming from the top of the rear section of the building.
The fire destroyed an external staircase and spread up three floors to the building’s attic before being extinguished, Talmadge said.
No injuries were reported in the blaze. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the eight residents who were displaced by the fire, she said.
