The deadline for applying to San Francisco Unified School District schools for the 2015-16 year is Friday, district officials said.
School choice applications and required documents for transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades are due by 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Education Placement Center at 555 Franklin St.
Parents or guardians can also turn in applications and required documents at Carver Elementary School at 1360 Oakdale Ave. no later than 2:40 p.m. Friday.
Students currently enrolled in a SFUSD school can drop off their application at their current school.
SFUSD spokeswoman Gentle Blythe said San Francisco has a school choice program because “the vast majority of parents want to choose the best school for their child.”
Once parents or legal guardians decide on a list of schools, the family can begin filling out the application.
“We really do encourage families to submit their application on time,” Blythe said.
That gives students and parents the best opportunity to get the school of their choice, she said.
Blythe also suggests that parents list as many schools on the application as possible so they get an acceptable school.
The required documents include the parent/guardian’s picture identification, the student’s birth certificate or hospital record and two proofs of home address. The school district does not accept cellphone bills as proof of home address.
The district will send out placement letters by mail on March 13.
Parents who do not submit an application by Friday’s deadline or students looking for a higher choice than their initial assignment have additional opportunities to apply. Those can be found on the district’s website or by calling the district at (415) 241-6000.
