The woman convicted in the brutal murder of a homeless woman who was kidnapped and lit on fire at a parking lot of San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 2007 was sentenced this morning to life in prison.
A San Francisco Superior Court jury in October found Mia Sagote, 36, guilty of first-degree murder with special circumstances for kidnapping and torture for the killing of 49-year-old Jill May on Jan. 12, 2007.
Sagote was sentenced this morning to life in prison without the possibility of parole, San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon said.
“It’s as brutal of a murder as you can get,” Gascon said.
May, a transient, was kidnapped by Sagote and an accomplice from the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood and driven out to an empty parking lot at Candlestick.
Sagote then doused her with gasoline and lit her on fire.
The vicious killing stemmed from an issue Sagote, a known drug dealer in the neighborhood, had with May for reporting an incident to police.
The day before the killing, May told police that Sagote stripped her naked and robbed her because of a drug debt owed by May’s boyfriend, according to prosecutors.
Sagote’s accomplice, Leslie Siliga, pleaded guilty earlier this year to voluntary manslaughter and kidnapping charges and will return to court on Jan. 9 to set a sentencing date, prosecutors said.
