San Francisco Board of Supervisors president David Chiu today announced his candidacy for a state Assembly seat.
Chiu is seeking to replace Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, who is being termed out of office next year.
Chiu represents the city’s District 3, which includes the Financial District, Chinatown and North Beach, and has served as board president for three consecutive terms starting in 2009.
He has lived in the district for more than 15 years and worked as a civil rights attorney, a prosecutor with the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and as the founder of an online communications technology company prior to being elected supervisor in 2008.
He grew up in Boston and received his undergraduate, law and master’s degrees from Harvard University.
Chiu announced his candidacy online this morning. He joins his colleague on the board, Supervisor David Campos, in the race for the Assembly seat.
