3:01 PM: A 3-year-old boy on a bicycle was critically injured after he was struck by the driver of a pickup truck in San Francisco’s Richmond District late this morning, a police spokesman said.
Around 11:45 a.m., a collision involving a silver Dodge pickup truck and a child on a bike was reported on Fulton Street and 43rd Avenue, according to San Francisco police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy.
The truck was heading north on 43rd Avenue and the driver was making a left turn onto westbound Fulton Street, Shyy said.
A group of pedestrians were walking out of Golden Gate Park across Fulton Street with the 3-year-old boy riding ahead on his bicycle when he was struck, Shyy said.
Initially police said the child was 4 years old, but have since clarified his age.
Both the driver and the group of pedestrians had a green light, Shyy said.
The driver continued driving for a few feet before making a U-turn when he realized he had hit something, Shyy said.
The boy was taken to San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition, Shyy said. No one else was injured.
The driver, who had at least one other passenger in his truck, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Shyy said.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, he said.
The 5-Fulton bus line was rerouted around the area for about two hours after the crash, San Francisco Municipal Railway spokesman Paul Rose said.
Around 2:20 p.m., the crash site had been cleared and the buses returned to their usual route.
