The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is giving city crosswalks a bold, new look, SFMTA officials said. The change is part of an effort to end all traffic fatalities in the city by 2024, an effort called Vision Zero.
Instead of two white lines that cross the entire width of the street, crosswalks across the city will be zebra-striped, with bolder, white lines. The bolder stripes make the crosswalks more visible, SFMTA officials said.
The SFMTA had previously used zebra-striped crosswalks near schools and at mid-block crossings. Now the SFMTA has repainted hundreds of crosswalks to date on streets such as Geary Boulevard, Third Street and Guerrero Street.
SFMTA officials said the new crosswalks are a quick, effective and inexpensive way to improve safety.
