A stretch of roadway above the under-construction Central Subway in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood gave way over the weekend, a San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency spokesman said today.
The asphalt on Fourth Street between Market and Mission streets was seen dipping at about 2 p.m. Saturday, SFMTA spokesman Paul Rose said.
Rose said the incident was unexpected and that the cause of the “void in the street,” as crews are calling it, has not yet been determined.
Rose said no damage to buildings in the area has been reported.
He said crews have filled below the road with concrete to stabilize the area and are working on repairing a water line.
According to Rose, the underground Central Subway, which will connect the South of Market neighborhood to Chinatown, has been installed beneath that section of roadway.
Rose said crews are working to determine what made the surface of the street give way and do not yet know how long the repairs will take.
