An Emeryville man arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol suffered serious injuries on Saturday evening when he crashed into three cars and a café in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood, narrowly missing a car with a woman and child inside, police said.
The driver of the car, identified as Marc Nagata, 41, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries around 5:30 p.m. Saturday after he crashed just outside the Hall of Justice in the 800 block of Bryant Street, according to San Francisco police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan.
Nagata, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, exited eastbound Interstate Highway 80 at Seventh and Bryant streets and crashed into three unoccupied, parked vehicles, Gatpandan said.
Two of the vehicles crashed into Caffe Roma at 885 Bryant St., Gatpandan said.
A manager at the café said there was a mother with her child parked in a vehicle near the café and the driver just missed their vehicle.
The manager said luckily no one other than the driver was injured and that thankfully no one was killed.
Nagata was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries and has since been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Gatpandan said.
Caffe Roma is open for business today, but the manager said the entrance to their office space and the area where they receive deliveries was extensively damaged and that the café is working with its insurance company to make repairs.
