As if the parade, celebrations and champagne aren’t enough, if the San Francisco Giants win the World Series, Kansas City Mayor Sly James will regale a local church.
With the Giants’ series against the Kansas City Royals set to begin today, James and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee made a bet on which team will be this year’s world champions.
If the Giants win, James will perform with the Glide Ensemble and Change Band at Glide Memorial Church and will serve meals to the homeless there. If the Royals win, Lee will travel to Kansas City to read to third graders.
Each mayor also put some of their city’s best offerings on the line. James is putting up world-famous Kansas City barbecue and jazz records while Lee is offering Humphry Slocombe ice cream, Boudin sourdough bread and Philz coffee.
“This improbable group of players refuses to quit, and whether they win ugly or win with walkoffs, it just keeps rolling,” Lee said in a statement today.
But the Royals, who have won eight straight playoff games since their extra-innings wild card win against the Oakland A’s, could prove a tough opponent.
“Coming off back to back sweeps of the Angels and the Orioles, the Royals show no signs of slowing down,” James said in a statement. “We’ve waited 29 years for this and not even a Giant can stand in our way.”
Lee also proclaimed this week San Francisco Giants Pride Week, starting today until the end of the World Series.
Game 1 of the World Series is in Kansas City and is scheduled to start at 5:07 p.m.
