Residents throughout the Bay Area can celebrate Earth Day on Tuesday at a variety of festivals and special events.
Alcatraz Cruises is hosting free Earth Day festivities at Pier 33 in San Francisco from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Kids will be able to do arts and crafts and get their faces painted while their parents learn about how to make their homes more sustainable.
Attendees can also learn about plants that grow on Alcatraz and look at microorganisms from the San Francisco Bay through a microscope.
At the California Academy of Sciences, there will be a special interactive dance performance by USF’s Dance Generator called “Oceans MOVE” at 10:30 a.m. Patrons who bring a reusable water bottle to the museum between April 22 and May 4 will also get $3 off the price of admission.
Earth Day San Jose will include a full day of activities at San Jose State University, including a petting zoo, a carnival, a composting workshop and live music. The events run from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Tower Lawn and Campus Village Courtyard.
At Sonoma State University, the Earth Day Fair will feature live music and an electric Tesla Model S car. The fair will be held in the plaza between Darwin and Stevenson Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In Milpitas, the County of Santa Clara will flip the switch on a new fuel cell at Elmwood Correctional Facility that will use natural gas to generate clean electricity for the jail onsite. In addition, energy companies will present a check to the Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area to fulfill the wishes of three children from San Jose, Union City and Daly City battling cancer.
Earth Day celebrations will continue this weekend and into May. For a longer list of activities, visit CalRecycle’s Earth Day calendar at http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/PublicEd/EarthDay.
