San Francisco police have arrested two dozen people for drug-related offenses near schools as part of an annual operation designed to keep drugs away from young people, a police spokesman said today.
Officers made 22 felony and two misdemeanor arrests in “Operation Safe Schools,” which was carried out over two weeks starting on Sept. 16.
The crackdown was concentrated on areas within 1,000 feet of schools in the Police Department’s Bayview, Mission and Tenderloin districts, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.
It was timed to coincide with the start of the school year. Last year, police arrested 25 people in the operation.
When the cases go to the district attorney’s office, prosecutors can add school-zone enhancements to the charges when applicable, which mean longer sentences for the offenders, police said.
