San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announced Wednesday the appointment of a veteran city planner as the director of the city’s Short-Term Rental Administration & Enforcement Office.
Kevin Guy managed some of the most challenging projects in San Francisco — such as the Transbay Tower and the Nob Hill Masonic Center renovation — as part of the Planning Department’s planning division, according to the mayor’s office.
“With more than 15 years of planning experience, Kevin Guy has extensive knowledge and experience in navigating large projects through the planning process in our diverse neighborhoods that make him uniquely qualified to hold the important role of leading the city’s Office of Short-Term Rental Administration & Enforcement,” Lee said in a statement.
City officials recently created the office to manage short-term rentals of residential units via companies like Airbnb.
Legal short-term rentals in San Francisco began Feb. 1. Under city law, residents may legally rent their primary residential unit for periods of less than 30 days after obtaining valid registration, city officials said.
Guy’s office will help residents apply for and register their rentals and it will handle complaints and enforce short-term rental regulations, according to city officials.
“With Kevin Guy at the helm … we have a capable, seasoned leader that will continue to find ways to incentivize hosts to be good actors under the law and crack down on the egregious violators that no one supports,” Supervisor Mark Farrell said in a statement.
The city administrator’s office, led by Naomi Kelly, will oversee Guy’s office, which will be located at 1650 Mission St.
“He is well known as a no-nonsense problem solver,” Kelly said in a statement.
