He said that Pansy Division was originally conceived because there wasn’t anything like a “gay punk rock band” at the time. There was a whole scene that did evolve afterward. More recently, Jon said PD has mostly songs which have “cross over” appeal.

I was like, “THIS EXISTS?!?!”

I’m having trouble thinking of anything else that’s even comparable: gay artists that are artists first, gays second. Gays can be so self-ghettoizing — sometimes it’s hard to find us participating in mainstream culture, or even a mainstream subculture, if that makes sense.
