1:24 PM: Smoke coming from the wreckage of Asiana Flight 214 at San Francisco International Airport early this morning came from crews cutting through the charred aircraft, an airport spokesman said.
Around 5 a.m., a large portion of the plane was in the process of being removed from the runway. To help move the plane, it had to be cut into two parts, SFO spokesman Doug Yakel said.
In the process of cutting through the metal, the friction caused some smoking, Yakel said.
Fire crews were standing by and were able to suppress the smoke and there was no fire, he said.
The removal is one of the final steps to reopen Runway 28L by Saturday after its closure since the deadly crash last weekend.

5:21 AM: Smoke could be seen coming from the site of the Asiana Flight 214 plane crash wreckage at San Francisco International Airport this morning.
The cause of the smoke has not been released.
