The Board of Supervisors’ Land Use and Economic Development Committee is set to hold their first public hearing today regarding a proposed ban on new bars on Polk St. between O’Farrell and California.
As the Ex reminds us, the six block strip has actually been described as “a new Las Vegas” given its proliferation of bars, totaling 45 alcohol permits and countless more angry residents.
Thanks to the wonders of gentrification, two blocks of this reportedly rowdy street was once simply blighted and lifeless. As Polk St. has transformed into one of the trendier areas of the city, an increase in noise, crowds, and general revelry has also hit the area.
Neighbors complained and Board of Supervisors President David Chiu heard their call, introducing legislation last October that would halt any additional bars from opening on that section of Polk.
Since its introduction in October, the proposed legislation has been changed to eliminate previous live entertainment restrictions involving special permits as well as restrictions in the sales of alcohol for newer restaurants. Additionally, a five year sunset clause has also been added.
