Quid pro quo.

Mr. Turman recently applied to serve on the Ethics Commission, and withdrew at the hearing on his qualifications began. Now he is applying for the Police Commission. He currently serves on the Human Rights Commission.

This comes close to shopping for a position. Perhaps that might be expected in a highly politicized environment, but the Police Commission has real work that needs to be done, and commissioners make decisions that can end an officer’s career or change policies that have life and death consequences — and which clearly need revision, judging from the amount spent by the Department in settlements.

Mr. Turman may be a fine fellow, but is he the right fit for the Police Commission other than his political connections?

San Francisco would be very fortunate to have him serve on the Commission.

Jane Kim ought to spend a little more time in SF politics before raising questions about people who have been committed to social justice for all since before her birth. Allegations are exactly that. There is no court record, no conviction, and nothing regarding the facts except what someone alleged five years ago (obviously, Ms. Kim was not present and has no knowledge of the facts beyond what she read in the SF Weekly or here). Mr. Turman deserves more fairness than this.
