A long time ago, but, actually, not all that long ago, Allan Hough posted a link to a Chronicle article on his online internet website, Mission Mission. One of the subjects of the article posted a comment correcting some of the information presented in the Chron piece, so Allan, a considerate and conscientious guy, contacted the Chron reporter to let her know about the comment, ending with:
…But I am curious about your side of the story, if you feel like sharing. If you decide to respond in the comments section, do let me know via email too. Eve Batey and I found that for some reason Chronicle IP addresses get caught up in WordPress.com’s Akismet spam filter*, so I might have to fish it out of the trash.
The Chron reporter’s response was nice enough, but contained this line:
“I don’t typically comment on blogs or websites, unless someone is willing to pay me a salary to do so.”
Allan had some fun with this, even as, privately, we shook our heads and said things like “no wonder!” by which we mean no wonder (newspapers are dying: understood) (tangent, the best sentence diagramming sites are on geocities, oh no!)
We couldn’t help but think of that Chron reporter, whose name we’re not saying only because Allan is a nice guy and doesn’t want us to say it, when we saw this craigslist ad on Gawker. Since this was back in February, while things were bad at the Chron they weren’t bad they way they are now. So maybe now, this reporter might be tempted to forgo the salary requirement and instead accept “Compensation: $2-$5per comment or Forum that’s relative to our product. This can add up very quickly as there are 1000’s of Blogs, forums, Tweets, Groups, etc out in the Webworld.”
And for the rest of y’all? Thanks for commenting on this site, gratis.
*Seriously, for months I though Allan had banned me for something. And now I’ll bet he wished he did, because all I do all day is try to pit his wife against him and drink his beer. True story.
