Two dogs died while six others survived a three-alarm house fire that was brought under control in San Francisco’s Ingleside neighborhood this morning, a fire department spokeswoman said.
The blaze was reported at 8:56 a.m. at a home in the 1100 block of Plymouth Avenue near Ocean Avenue and there were initial reports that two people were trapped in an in-law unit behind the main residence, San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.
When crews arrived on scene, the blaze was in the rear of the building and a person was trapped in the backyard. Firefighters escorted the victim to safety, Talmadge said.
The other two occupants of the home had already evacuated to the front of the house when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters found six pit bulls alive and two dead dogs on the property, Talmadge said.
Residents notified firefighters that everyone was accounted for and that nobody else remained inside the building. Firefighters were then able to bring the blaze under control at 10:31 a.m., Talmadge said.
She said a firefighter was treated for exhaustion, while a passerby who tripped over a fire hose was transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Three adult residents were displaced from their home and the city’s Department of Building Inspection has been called to the scene to evaluate the structure.
Two neighboring buildings were also damaged in the blaze, but those residents were not displaced, Talmadge said.
She said the American Red Cross responded to assist the three adults and six dogs.
Talmadge said fire investigators are interviewing the residents and that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
