A motorcyclist killed in a crash on Treasure Island after a chase on the Bay Bridge and San Francisco city streets with California Highway Patrol officers Tuesday afternoon was identified today as 20-year-old San Leandro resident Joseph Lilly, according to the San Francisco medical examiner’s office.
Lilly drove through the Bay Bridge toll plaza around 1:10 p.m. when a CHP motorcycle unit noticed the vehicle was speeding and did not have a rear license plate, CHP Officer Vu Williams said.
The motorcycle officer attempted to stop Lilly, who continued traveling west on Highway 80 into San Francisco where he exited at the Harrison Street off-ramp, turned around and went back on the bridge in the eastbound direction, Williams said.
The CHP officer continued to follow Lilly but lost him after he exited Highway 80 to Treasure Island, the spokesman said.
Minutes later two CHP officers spotted Lilly, who matched a description from the motorcycle unit, near the Treasure Island main gate, Williams said.
The officers tried to stop Lilly but he took off toward Highway 80, according to Williams.
The motorcyclist crashed after trying to negotiate a turn on Treasure Island Road at the split where motorists can either choose to go toward San Francisco or Oakland, Williams said.
He was ejected from his vehicle and transported to San Francisco General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the spokesman said.
The accident closed the westbound Highway 80 off-ramp to Treasure Island until about 5 p.m., Williams said.
