Residents of San Francisco’s Treasure Island will have expanded postal options starting today, U.S. Postal Service officials said.
A new Village Post Office, which will offer stamps, P.O. boxes, prepaid packages and Priority Mail boxes and envelopes, is opening today at the Island Cove Market, located at 150 Fourth St. on Treasure Island.
VPOs are operated by third parties and complement services offered by regular post offices. There are more than 420 around the country, but this will be the first one in the San Francisco Postal District, which extends from Sunnyvale north to the Oregon border, postal officials said.
USPS spokesman James Wigdel said VPOs are “a relatively new concept for the postal service” and are “primarily designed to give a postal presence in a community where they don’t necessarily have a postal presence.”
Wigdel said Treasure Island residents don’t yet have their own post office but will be able to go to the market to get the various mailing supplies or drop off letters and packages to be mailed.
Other services available at regular post offices, such as certified mail, money orders and passports, will not be available at the VPO, he said.
The market will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.
A grand opening ceremony for the Village Post Office is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at the Treasure Island market.
