A man who died after a shooting in Visitacion Valley earlier this month has been identified as San Francisco resident Neal Perez, according to the San Francisco medical examiner’s office.
Perez, 27, was shot multiple times by a suspect armed with a handgun shortly before 2 a.m. in the first block of Teddy Avenue on April 1, according to police.
He was driven to the hospital but died nearly a week later of his injuries, according to police.
Perez was shot on the same block where, later that same day, the FBI and San Francisco police served a search warrant related to a cybercrime investigation and arrested Stanislav Petrov, 29, and a woman identified in court documents as Milagro Moraga.
Petrov and Moraga were charged in U.S. District Court with weapons and drug charges.
Petrov was beaten by two Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies with more than 40 baton blows on a street in the Mission District on Nov. 12 at the end of a car chase that began in unincorporated San Leandro.
A video of the beating released by the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office has circulated widely online. Petrov’s arrest came shortly after he filed a complaint against Alameda County alleging he suffered head injuries and permanent damage to his hands rendering him unable to work.
The FBI said at the time of Petrov’s arrest that it was unrelated to Perez’ shooting. San Francisco police have released few details on the shooting but today said Petrov is not considered a suspect.
