San Francisco’s transit agency launched a new bus route on Saturday, agency officials said.
The 55 16th Street will operate every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekday evenings and weekends from about 6 a.m. to midnight, said officials with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.
The bus will service all 22 Fillmore stops along 16th Street east of Mission Street and will also make new stops along 16th Street at Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Missouri and Fourth streets.
“This new route not only eases crowding on one of our busiest routes but the new 55 16th Street offers newfound access that connects the community from the 16th Street Mission BART and the downtown core to the Mission Bay neighborhood and the new University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center at Mission Bay,” said SFMTA Director of Transportation Ed Reiskin, in a statement.
The UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay was scheduled to open Sunday.
The new bus line is temporary until the SFMTA modifies the alignment of the 22 Fillmore, which will replace the 55 16th Street after realignment.
“San Francisco is a growing city, and this new 55 bus route is another great example of how we are improving connectivity between our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Ed Lee in a statement.
SFMTA officials said the new line is part of Muni Forward, a larger effort at the agency to increase service frequency and improve reliability.
