Employees at the Recology garbage and recycling center in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood were evacuated today after someone turned in a mortar and gunpowder, according to fire officials.
Employees at the facility, located at 501 Tunnel Ave., reported the incident to police around 11:30 a.m., Officer Gordon Shyy said.
A police bomb squad responded to the facility, evacuated employees and deemed the area safe about an hour later, Shyy said.
Recology accepts small amounts of hazardous materials generated by businesses and households, such as motor oil, paint, sludge or asbestos, but does not accept ammunition or other weapons-related waste, according to its website.
