San Francisco residents are being warned about a phone and text message scam in which a person claiming to be a police officer contacts the victim and tells them he is investigating them, the Department of Emergency Management announced Thursday.
The callers uses the name Edward Johnson or Jeffrey Johnson and has allegedly fabricated his caller identification to resemble the telephone number of the police’s non-emergency line, (415) 553-0123, according to department officials.
The suspect tells the victims through a text message or phone call that he is investigating them for sending nude pictures to a woman, department officials said.
Residents who have received the calls are being advised to never send any money to the suspect. Additionally, if a voice message is left, the victim should try to preserve it and file a police report, according to department officials.
