Teen Shot During Playground Robbery

A teenage boy was seriously injured in a shooting that occurred during a robbery at San Francisco’s Excelsior Playground on Friday night, a police spokesman said today.

The 17-year-old was shot at about 8:35 p.m. Friday at the park, located near Madrid Street and Russia Avenue.

Two suspects believed to be between 18 and 25 years old approached the victim and his friends in the park and asked if they wanted to buy marijuana, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

When the teen declined, the suspects robbed him of his cellphone then opened fire, striking him multiple times in the upper body, Esparza said.

The boy was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are considered life-threatening, Esparza said.

The suspects fled in a red minivan and had not been found as of this morning, according to Esparza.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call the Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with “SFPD” in the message.
