MGMT have never been ones to follow the supposed rules of the music industry. While most folks think of self-titled albums as reserved strictly for debuts (so you don’t forget an artist’s name!), the psychedelic superstars are more focused on making tunes than a witty album name.
Thus, their third endeavor and self-titled LP will be released next month. The band is apparently unconcerned with the name of song titles as well. A brief scan of the track list includes “Cool Song No. 2,” which is, fittingly, the second song on the album.
No matter what MGMT may lack in titles they more than make up for with a unique production that offers listeners and concert-goers the full experience of artsy visuals and experimental sounds. Their stage presence makes you feel more like you’re entering into performance art than a rock show, though the untouchable chill of frontmen Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden do little to detract from their sound.
Make your hump day slightly more creative by catching MGMT at the Warfield this Wednesday, August 28. Tickets range from $33 to $45.
