To only further the theory that the San Francisco Appeal is slowly reconstructing itself as a wrestling blog that just so happens to cover local Bay area news and events, the preceding is a photo of Golden State Warriors (and everybody’s favorite buzzed uncle according to teammate Andre Iguodala) forward Draymond Green wearing a replica WWE Heavyweight Championship belt. (photo by way of Draymond Green’s Instagram)
And unlike the many people walking around Wrestlemania in Santa Clara this past March with their own replica championship belt, who are probably just champions of having 430 extra bucks lying around Green actually won something. Though to be fair, maybe the people around Wrestlemania with replica belts beat cancer or are the first in their family to graduate college and the belt is their own symbol/totem/Campellian talisman for overcoming the odds, a la current US Championship/Make-A-Wish granter John Cena.
At the risk of turning this into another Oakland vs. San Francisco narrative, SF Giants’ Hunter Pence also received a replica championship belt, this time from former Heavyweight and Intercontinental Champion Daniel Bryan during the San Francisco Giants victory parade last fall. But the Warriors belt has custom GSW emblems on each side. I’d fantasy book this as a belt vs. belt/champion vs. champion match (not unlike US Champion John Cena vs. NXT Champion Kevin Owens), but with the looming specter of the Warriors making tracks for San Francisco, a fantasy booking like that might end in a Twilight Zone-esque ironic twist.
