The passing of Prop 8 wasn’t taken lightly here in San Francisco, and it was a shot heard across the nation for marriage equality and the fundamental rights of minorities — moreso, because it was coincidentally timed with the release of “Milk.” Oral arguments on the validity of Proposition 8 are going to be historic, and they begin in the California Supreme Court on Thursday, March 5. That’s in two days.
In preparation for what’s going to be a marker for social justice and LGBT rights, there will be a marriage equality rally on Wednesday, March 4 at the Harvey Milk Plaza starting at 5pm, with a full roster of speakers and then a candlelight “Eve of Justice” vigil that begins at the plaza at 6pm and marches down to the California Supreme Court (Civic Center Plaza). At the plaza from 5-6, expect speakers from celebs, community organizations and a performance by the Gay Men’s Chorus and San Francisco Freedom Band. We won’t be alone — over 30 vigils are being simultaneously planned in California and across the nation.
March 5 is when they get oral on the courts; if you feel like getting up early there’s an interfaith gathering on the court steps from 7:30-8:45am. If you’re stuck at work, we will be streaming it live right here on the Appeal starting at 9 (the arguments will also be archived and re-watchable when over). Otherwise, a giant jumbotron screen will broadcast and show the in-court arguments for and against marriage equality so anyone and everyone can watch it live in the Civic Center Plaza from 9:00am-noon. See you there!
