Brazil’s contribution added some much needed zest to the to the London Olympics Closing Ceremonies (those Spice Girls were just bleh, right? I expected so much more!). This weekend, add a little cultural zest to your routine and head to “The Spirit of Brazil” at the Mission’s ODC Theater.

Produced by ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco, the show highlights the traditional Brazilian arts of capoeira and maculelê: folk dance and musical forms that originated in the Brazilian slave plantations. This weekend’s performance delve into how these two art forms evolved from post-slavery to contemporary times.

Each “Spirit of Brazil” program has a theme, and this year’s is “Mar de Tradições” (Sea of Traditions). In addition to members of ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco, the show includes visiting artists, Professores Mobília, Goma and Yara and music by master percussionist Gamo da Paz and his group Quimbanda, joined by musician Alfie Macias and choreographer/dancer Raffaella Falchi and SAMBAXÉ Dance.

Becca Klarin writes about dance. Her first stage role was at the age of four, where she dressed in a brightly colored bumble bee tutu and black patent leather taps shoes. She remembers bright lights and spinning in circles with her eleven other bees, but nothing more.
