The Appeal has been told by several sources that James Pimentel, Executive Editor of the SF Examiner, resigned last Friday, and that editorial staff was informed today.
We’re told that the Ex staff was addressed by publisher John Wilcox Tuesday afternoon, who told them that “several factors” led to Pimentel’s departure, but those factors weren’t detailed. Of course, rumors are swirling! Ex staffers, the lines are open, confidentiality is assured.
While no successor has been named, sources tell us Pimentel will stick around to help with the transition, but won’t have any contact with the editorial staff. Other sources dispute this, saying Pimentel is “gonezo as of now.” Note: We’ve confirmed that Pimentel has departed SF Examiner for good, and will not be assisting in any transition to his as-yet-unnamed successor.
Calls to Wilcox and managing editor Deirdre Hussey have not been returned at publication time. I did manage to reach Pimentel on his cell phone, who asked to call me back. After not getting a call back by deadline, I called again and was sent straight to voicemail — if and when he or anyone else returns my call, I’ll of course update.
